當東方古老智慧的結晶-《金剛經》(The Diamond Sutra)與現代商業環境相遇,會擦出什麼火花?

有一美國人,在位於印度的賽拉梅西藏寺院(Sera Mey Tibetan Monastery)修習20年佛法,同時將佛學中的智慧運用到商場,成功打造出年營業額一億美元的事業體。這位在商場中實踐佛法的西方僧侶,名叫麥可.羅區格西(Geshe Michael Roach)。【註】

羅區格西從普林斯頓大學(Princeton University)畢業後前往印度,與幾千位藏僧一同生活,學得一口正宗的藏語,並在1983年出家。之後,在精神導師的建議下,他重返商業社會,加入了當時資本額僅5萬美元的安鼎國際鑽石公司(Andin International Diamond Corporation)。他自述那段過程:

“My principal teacher told me that, although the monastery was an ideal place for learning the great ideas of Buddhist wisdom, a busy American office would provide the perfect 'laboratory' for actually testing these ideas in real life.”

“One rule my Tibetan Lama had given me about going to work in a normal business office was that I keep quiet about being a Buddhist. I was to wear my hair at normal length (rather than shaved), and dress in normal clothes. Whatever Buddhist principles I used in my work had to be applied quietly, without any announcement or fanfare. I was to be a Buddhist sage on the inside, and a normal American businessman on the outside.”

安鼎國際鑽石公司現今營業額超過1億美元,職員逾500人,並在2008年被股神巴菲特(Warren Buffett)相中買下。這間公司的表現之所以如此出色,主要是因羅區在任職副總裁期間,為公司所做的大部份決定和政策,都根源於他所學到的佛學精神。

例如,佛法中講「空性」(Emptiness),談到「諸法皆空」,就是指所有事物都是中性的(或空的、虛幻的),沒有對錯好壞,全憑我們看帶待它的觀點而定,而這也正是事物的潛能。In other words, “what is” is the emptiness of any idea and people can attach any idea onto “what is”. 羅區認為,一個生意人若能清楚覺知到這種潛能,植入正向的銘印(imprint),就能在未來看到這個正向結果在他的事業中發生。

又例如,他運用「業力」(Karma)的運作方式-「要怎麼收穫,先怎麼栽」來管理事業,幫助他人成就事業,自己的事業也將得到回報。

“When you give something away to another person, when you help any single other living being with your hands or your time or your funds, then a certain imprint is planted in your mind; the act is always recorded by the consciousness of the act, and consciousness is turned on and recording all the time. This imprint stays in the subconscious gathering strength, growing in power like any physical plant or tree. At some point it makes its way to the head of the line of your awareness, into your conscious mind, and colors-even creates-your impression of the world around you, and even yourself.”

“Here is a short explanation about how karma works: I have a company, and I want it to make a better profit. And so I take some of the company money, and I invest it in a smaller business which is being started by a poor person in my country. When I hand this person the money, I am watching my own arm and hand reach out to give the money. My mind makes a recording of what I am seeing. It becomes a memory. The memory plants a seed of karma in my mind. This seed gets bigger and bigger in my mind, and then it opens up. When the seed opens up, inside my mind, it makes me see a great opportunity for my own business which I never saw before. This is how the karma comes back to me.”

羅區認為,追求心靈層面的佛學精神與追求世俗名祿的商業環境其實有共通之處:

“The goal of business, and of ancient Tibetan wisdom, and in fact of all human endeavor, is to enrich ourselves-to achieve prosperity, both outer and inner.”

“The key to inner success and the key to outer success are the same. If you really understand how to be successful in meditation, for example, then you can use this same understanding to be successful in business.”

“We can enjoy this prosperity only if we maintain a high degree of physical and mental health. And over the length of our lives we must seek ways to make this prosperity meaningful in a larger sense.”

羅區也提出以下三大原則,做為尋求事業成功者的檢視方向:

1. Making the money.(賺到該賺的錢)。

“There is a belief prevalent in America and other Western countries that being successful, making money, is somehow wrong for people who are trying to lead a spiritual life. In Buddhism though it is not the money which is in itself wrong; in fact, a person with greater resources can do much more good in the world than one without. The question rather is how we make the money; whether we understand where it comes from and how to make it continue to come; and whether we keep a healthy attitude about the money.”

“Money doesn't make you happy, but a happy person who has money can do a lot of good in the world.”

2. Enjoying the money, or managing body and mind. (享受財富同時,同時做好身心管理)。

“We should enjoy the money; that is, we should learn how to keep our minds and bodies in good health while we make the money. The activity of creating wealth should not exhaust us to much physically or mentally that we cannot enjoy the wealth. A business person who ruins his health doing business is defeating the very purpose of business.”

3. Looking back, and knowing it was worth it.(往前回溯,知道事業是有意義的)。

“You should be able to look back at your business, at the end, and honestly say that your years of doing business have had some meaning. The end of every business enterprise we engage in, and in fact the end of our lives, must come to every person who ever does business. And at the most important part of the business-at the end, when we are looking back on all we have achieved-we should see that we have conducted ourselves and our business in a way that had some lasting meaning, that left some good mark in our world.”
