B.漏水的熱水瓶 C.冒犯 \n Once, at a party, I was introduced to a friend of a friend. We shook hands, I told her my name, she told me hers. Then she did something that I was ever so grateful for. \n "(A)Hang on," she said. "Can you say your name again? I wasn't really listening." \n She saved me from having to later-possibly even at the same party-(1)sheepishly admit that I, too, had already forgotten her name. \n Why are names so easy to forget? An informal poll of fellow Atlantic staffers confirmed that this is something that happens to even the most kind and conscientious among us. No sooner does someone utter the most fundamental factoid about themselves than the information flees our brains forever. There are a few reasons why this occurs: \n 主要的原因是: \n 1.The next-in-line effect: You don't remember what the person speaking before you said because you're thinking of what you're going to say. \n 2.You're not really that interested: Your level of interest can impact how well you remember something. \n 3.A failure of working memory: There are two types of storage in the brain: Long-term and short-term. The short-term variety is called "working memory," and it functions like a very (B)leaky thermos. Information like a name needs to be transferred to a different brain system that creates long-term memories that persist over time. \n 4.Names are kind of pointless: A name doesn't actually tell you anything about the person you're meeting, and thus it doesn't give your brain anything to (2)cling to. So you get this funny phenomenon where you can remember lots about a person you recently met-everything except their name. \n So the next time you'd like to excuse yourself for forgetting someone's name without (C)offending the person, just say something like, "Oh sorry, I was just overly concerned with telling you my own name to remember yours."

If I have more time, I will be happy to help you now. \n 3.If you placed your order now, you would get a big discount. \n 4.I wish I don't have so many things to do. \n 5.If he worked harder, he wouldn't be laid off. \n Debugged \n 1.If I were you, I’d be more careful. \n 2.I’m sorry that I can’t help. If I had more time, I’d be happy to help you. \n 3.If you place your order, you will get a big discount. \n 4.I wish I didn’t have so many things to do. \n I wish/If only都是表達期望,只是這個期望的實現機率很低。 對過去的懊悔:「我希望我當時…,請使用過去完成式 (could/would have + p.p.)。 \n 5.If he had worked harder, he wouldn’t have been laid off. If領導的子句動詞改成had+p.p.,後面的子句則是要多加上助動詞(could/would have + p.p.)

\n Debug \n 1.She congratulated for my engagement. \n 2.Are you angry at me now? \n 3.He is married with my best friend. \n 4.She resembles to her father. \n 5.The toy is below the sofa. \n Debugged \n 1.She congratulated me on my engagement. \n 2.Are you angry with me now? Be angry at是對一件事情生氣,大家常常搞混是因為生氣也可以說:be mad at someone。 \n 3.He is married to my best friend. He married my best friend. \n 4.She resembles her father. She takes after her father. \n 5.The toy is under the sofa. The temperature is three degrees below zero.

顯著的 B.小費 C.直率; 唐突 \n Brazil 巴西 \n There will always be a standard 10% service charge added to your bill, and you won’t necessarily have to tip. If you do feel like being generous, an extra 5~10% will really make your server very happy. Just remember to do this as subtly as possible—Brazilians don’t (1)make a big show of this. \n Israel 以色列 \n Tipping is a fairly straightforward 10~13%. Your service may not be (A)stellar, but those are the rules. Restaurants in some touristy parts of Tel Aviv may add a gratuity as high as 18%, so keep an eye out to avoid double tipping. \n Dubai 杜拜 \n In Dubai it’s mandatory for restaurants to charge 10% (B)gratuity on all restaurant and bar bills. You can add a couple of dirhams to this if you feel like it. Waiters are not paid very much in Dubai, so it is always very appreciated. \n Germany 德國 \n German bars and restaurants will include the gratuity as part of what you owe, but that’s not all you have to pay. It is customary to (2)round the bill up after that, usually to the euro. This can be anywhere from 5~10%. When it’s time to settle up, you won’t get a bill: your waiter tells you the total and then you tell them how much you want to pay, including your “tip,” and hand over the money. \n Czech Republic 捷克 \n While locals in the Czech Republic don’t leave tips, that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. Foreign tourists are definitely expected to leave some kind of tip for service—as long as you’re in a high tourist traffic area, like Prague for instance. The standard tip is 10%. Just remember not to misinterpret your server’s (C)curtness for rudeness. \n India 印度 \n If you liked the service, go ahead and tip your server 5~10%. You have to adjust that amount though, based on how big the meal you’re eating is. If the bill is for a small meal, and totals less than 300 rupees, tip the full 10%. If the bill is higher, tip it towards 5%. \n No Tip 不必付小費 \n Even if you’ve had really extraordinary service, if the country you’re visiting doesn’t customarily practice tipping your servers there will not expect a tip. That doesn’t mean you can’t try to give them one, but just keep in mind that your offer may be more disturbing to the person you want to thank than gracious. Countries where tipping is not usually practiced include Italy, Japan, Vietnam, New Zealand, Australia, Belgium, France, Norway, Singapore, Malaysia, China and Hong Kong.

Is this where we take off our equipments? \n 3.I will introduce the characteristics of our products. \n 4.Items can be changed in 14 days of purchase. \n 5.Let me check the stock. \n Debugged \n 1.Thanks for stopping by our booth. \n My iPhone 5s just stopped working. Maybe it's time to get an iPhone 6! \n 2.Is this where we unload our equipment? \n 3.I will introduce the features of our products. \n 4.Items can be exchanged within 14 days of purchase. \n 5.Let me check the stock availability. Let me check the availability of the product for you.還有存貨是in stock,沒貨了是out of stock。

The British capital (1)clinched top spot in part (2)thanks to its position as a global transport hub with a high number of company headquarters, loose regulatory environment and judicial and political systems, which have proved a model for the rest of the world. \n Forbes based its city rankings on eight factors, including the level of foreign direct investment, the number of corporate headquarters, the amount of business types it dominates, ease of air travel to other global cities, the strength of financial services, technology and media power, and racial diversity. \n Rising stars were named as Singapore, currently in fourth place, Dubai in seventh and San Francisco, which is in equal 10th. 鯨類動物 B.豐富礦藏、意外的幸運 C.浮游生物 \n As a country with a distinctive "whale-eating" culture, Japan was ordered by the International Court of Justice on March 31st, 2014 to halt its Antarctic whaling program, which allowed an annual catch of 1,000 whales. However, except for the Antarctica expedition, Japan has been debating whether to conduct two other whaling programs, in which Japan kills minke whales (1)to the tune of 300 a year. \n Japan’s whaling history (2)dates back to the 12th century. Since when, whales have long been an important source of food for Japanese people. During the 19th and 20th century, Japan was highly involved in commercial whaling and many other countries also participated in the industry. Large whales were heavily hunted. It’s estimated that around 66~90% of the whales were removed from the ocean during that period. \n With the advance of technology in recent years, scientists have begun to gain a better understanding of the valuable roles (A)cetaceans play in ocean ecosystems. Some Japanese fishermen have argued that whales eat the fish they try to catch, claiming that whaling is necessary for protecting their fisheries. However, scientists have found that cetaceans can lead to an abundance of marine life and bring more fish to ocean ecosystem. Some even suggest the absence of cetaceans over the past decades may have altered the ecosystem and made it harder for marine organisms to survive. \n The research show that “whales help spread nutrients and microorganisms through different marine zones when they feed, often at great depths, and then return to the surface to breathe.” When they migrate long distances to mate, they bring the nutrients with them. “It contributes to feeding (B)bonanzas for other creatures thus making important nutrient contributions to waters poor in resources.” What’s more, the materials such as iron and nitrogen in whales’ urine and excrement are considered good fertilizers for (C)plankton. Scientists are going to conduct more studies and research in order to “better understand exactly how plankton and other organisms respond to the presence of whales.”

  • Debug

\n Debug \n 1.Could you please make the record of the meeting? \n 2.Can we change today's meeting to next Tuesday? \n 3.I thought about a good idea. \n 4.There was a dramatic increase of sales in July.7月的銷售大幅提升。 \n 5.How do you think about the new proposal? \n Debugged \n 1.Could you please take the meeting minutes? \n 2.Can we reschedule today’s meeting for next Tuesday? \n 3.I came up with a good idea. \n 「想」的英文是think,很多人自然而然認為想到一個好點子,要用 think/think about a good idea。 I need some time to think about it. \n 4.There was a dramatic increase in sales in July. \n 「… Sales increased dramatically in July. \n 5.What do you think of the new proposal? How do you think? How do you find the new proposal? How do you find是固定的用法,也用於詢問對方的想法。

受限制的 B.製藥的 C.永續的 \n When someone first suggested Andras Forgacs, an entrepreneur in the bioprinting industry, to (1)try his hand at 3D printing leather and meat, he thought they were somewhat insane. However, he soon realized what is really crazy is how humans raise and slaughter billions of animals for hamburgers and handbags today. \n What you don't know is that it takes 60 billion animals to provide our meat, dairy and leather goods. These animals are raised in factory farms, where they suffer in (A)confined living conditions. In environmental terms, beef production uses 100 times the water that most vegetables do. Raising the livestock not only requires more land, water, and energy, but it also produces more greenhouse gases. \n Andras Forgacs has been working on a 3D bioprinting technique, which was used to grow sophisticated body parts, such as ears, skin, and blood vessels. It was mainly for (B)pharmaceutical research and medical purposes. However, with his friend's suggestion, Andras came up with an idea to turn 3D bioprinting into a humane and (C)sustainable industry and thus he founded "Modern Meadow" to 3D print meat and leather. The process requires researchers to take cells from living animals and then grow those cells until they can be assembled into meat. \n Andras thinks we should move past killing animals as a resource to something more green and humane.(2)It's estimated that the Modern Meadow will be able to print out leather within two years while 3D printing meat still remains a long-term project. In fact, the first lab-grown hamburger has already been made, so it's possible for us to see 3D printed meat on the menu one day.

I got hurt!

I had a car accident yesterday, and I got hurt. 也可以當做形容詞用,但後面要加上-ed,變成scratched/scraped。 \n I fell off my bike yesterday and scratched/scraped my elbows. \n Cleaning your wound is important when getting a scratched/scraped knee. There is a sore in my mouth. I have a canker sore. \n Jessica sprained her neck when she turned around. \n If you twist your ankles often, you need to strengthen the muscles around them. I got a bruise. \n Red eye is the most common eye infection kids can have. \n When having an intestine inflammation, you should pay attention to your diet. I have stomach flu.

精疲力盡 B.應付 C.空出、 撥出 \n The clock has ticked past 6:30pm but you are still sitting in front of your computer. You have been thinking about going home on time today so as to spend some time with your kids, but you are still facing a pile of work. When you finally get to leave the office, it's already 9 pm and you are the last one to turn off the office lights again. You feel (A)drained by work after getting home, and feel like (1)hitting the sack right away. \n It’s a pattern with which most full-time professionals are familiar─you’re spending increasing amounts of time at your office, compromising your personal life just to make a good impression at work. However, staying longer at the office does not necessarily make you more productive. It often works (2)the other way around. The following tips might help you shorten your office hours so you can leave work on time. \n First, learn to prioritize things. Make a list of the three most important things you have to get done in a day. Limit it to three and focus on them. Don’t try to (B)juggle too many things at once. Tackle the important and difficult tasks first so they won’t slow you down at the end of the day when you might get stuck. Second, stay on top of your emails.(C)Set aside two or three particular times a day for checking emails and that’s it! Don’t bother to reply to every email as soon as it arrives in your inbox. You are not going to miss out on important messages because people will call you if it’s urgent. \n Third, be flexible. When you are busy, you can try to get to work earlier or compromise some of your lunch break time. Bring your own lunchbox so that it saves you more time. Don’t get involved in too many (3)“water cooler chats”; focus on accomplishing your tasks first. Lastly, feel good about what you have done. When you leave the office every day, don’t just think about the things you have yet to do. Remind yourself of the things you have accomplished today, ending your work-day feeling good about what you have done.

Thank you for your reminder. / Thank you for reminding me. \n 3.I will contact you at 3 p.m. tomorrow. 但是當名詞用的時候就要說keep in contact with。 \n 4.She is looking for a job. \n 5.I will be there in ten minutes. 答案是 within ten minutes.

盛行; 普遍的 B.駝背 C.跳脫框架的 \n Have you ever calculated how much time you spend sitting in a day? According to statistics, people spend an average of 9.3 hours sitting ─ more than the 7.7 hours we spend on sleeping per day. Sitting is remarkably (A)prevalent, but very few of us know that there are serious health consequences to it. \n According to a research conducted in New South Wales, Australia, sitting increases the risk of dying prematurely, even if you (1)engage in regular daily exercise. What's more, sitting can "cause anything from lower back pain to high cholesterol, diabetes, and obesity," said Mladen Golubic, medical director of the Center for Lifestyle Medicine at Cleveland Clinic's Wellness Institute. Some people even call sitting the new smoking of our generation. \n There are two creative ways that help reduce sitting time at work. First, you can set up a standing desk at your office so you are able to stand while you work. Cia Bernales, web producer at Fast Company, wrote an article on how she (2)persisted in standing and how the new working posture made her healthier although her body was not used to standing for hours at first. Her feet went numb and her lower back hurt at the end of the day. However, after a year of standing, she decided not to go back to sitting anymore. While this might sound a bit extreme, it does avoid slouching and (B)hunching over. You might also find yourselves taking more breaks and walks around the office after adopting the approach. \n Nilofer Merchant is a business innovator who is helping companies grow their business. She advises that we turn our one-on-one coffee meetings or conference room meetings into "walking" ones. "You will be surprised at how fresh air drives fresh thinking," she said. She has walking meetings (3)to the tune of 20-30 miles a week and it has completely changed her life and work style. She mentioned that "walking meetings" itself is an (C)out-of-the-box idea, which leads us to think "out of the box" at the same time. In this way, it might help us to look at things and solve problems with different perspectives.

Help will be at hand. \n There is a large amount of information on hand from the lawyers. \n Jack was on hand to record the beautiful wedding and share the happiness of the couple. 平均壽命 B.父系的 C.柏拉圖的 \n Japan is now facing a rapidly shrinking and aging population. In 2013, the country suffered the biggest population decline in history with a loss of 244,000 people. If the current trend persists, Japan's population is expected to shrink by nearly a third and over 65s will eventually (1)make up 40 percent of the people in 40 years. \n Declining birth rates, combined with a rising (A)life expectancy, are the main reasons why Japan’s population is shrinking and aging. It is a country with one of the highest life expectancies and the lowest fertility rates in the world. So why are the Japanese having fewer children? A survey conducted by the Japan Family Planning Association found that a staggering number of young Japanese men and women have (2)turned their backs on relationships and marriages. \n It can be attributed to the domination of traditional gender roles and its unique (3)“Otaku” culture. Japan has historically been (B)patriarchal. Men are expected to be the primary income earners in a household while women are considered main caregivers for children. Women are also responsible for house chores. However, as computer games and Manga cartoons flourish, Japanese men and women seem to be drifting apart to different worlds. \n Anita Rani, a BBC presenter, explores this very special “Otaku” culture in Japan. She interviewed one man, aged 39, who has been dating a virtual teenage girl for several years and now finds himself too emotionally connected with his virtual girlfriend to meet a real woman. “It’s (C)platonic,” he says. This is what leads to falling birth rates in Japan. Many men would rather be in virtual relationships than fulfill gender roles and deal with the challenges that real relationships might bring. For Japanese women, the Otaku culture has made it more difficult for them to meet suitable life partners. What’s more, it’s a challenge for them to strike a balance between work and family life after getting married.

(The Academy Awards/ The Oscars) \n 1.Here are the nominees for Best Actor in a Supporting Role... E.g. Al Gore was nominated for U.S. president in 2000. Best Actor/ Actress in a Leading Role,或直接說Best Actor/Actress。 \n 2.This is the sixth nomination for Cate Blanchett and her second Oscar win. E.g., Actress Meryl Streep has received 18 Academy Award nominations, holding the record as the most-nominated actress. E.g., Roger Federer got his first Wimbledon win in 2003. \n 3.I am going to dedicate the award to the cast and crew. E.g., I just cleaned my closet and cast away some of my old clothes. E.g., "I dedicate this award to all the people who have endured slavery and 21 million people who still suffer slavery today." - Steve McQueen「我要把這個獎獻給所有曾遭奴役,以及現在仍遭奴役的2,100萬人。」
